History of Agor Monza

Warren Agor, started out working for Roger Penske's racing team as a mechanic and fluids specialist, then went on to pursue a brief career as a stockbroker.  His racing career began in 1968, when formed Agor Racing Enterprises. His skills allowed him to run his team as a racecar owner, builder and driver which affording him success on the track.

In 1974, following a disappointing season, he set his eyes on a new Chevrolet Monza racecar for his mostly IMSA effort.  DeKon Engineering, LTD had already launched a series of ready-to-race Monzas in an effort to sweep the IMSA GT series and Porsche who dominated. However, Agor opted to build his own Monza racer and did with much anticipation.

In May, he began his 1975 season with an IMSA 100 mile race at Lime Rock, CT. It was his maiden race for the Agor Monza and finished 10th and 12th in both heats. At Mid-Ohio, he started in 12th position and finished fourth, impressive for the car's second race.  But at Mosport, he had a disappointing 10th place finish in June.  In August, at the 6 Hours of Mid-Ohio, Warren selected Steve "Yogi" Behr to co-drive the Agor-Monza. The team had skipped the two previous IMSA races in order to work on the car. Qualifying for third place on the grid was the reward. However, the race was not as pleasant and resulted in a DNF.

The 1976 season kicked off with another DNF but enjoyed a fourth place finish at their second race. At Mid-Ohio, Warren started from the back of the pack, but found his way through the field, ending up eighth overall, great results for a 100 miler. In August, at the Mid-Ohio 6 Hour, Agor and Peter Knab ended up 10th after a string of mechanical problems hampered efforts. Their last race for ’76 was in September at Road Atlanta, a very fast track. Starting 12th, Agor managed to finish fourth, but was three laps down from winner Al Holbert.

In 1977, the Agor team upgraded their Monza to the latest modifications, bigger wheels, a large rear wing and larger front spoiler. The car was faster, but it also had stronger opposition.  Always running on a shoestring budget.  In May, he took fifth at Lime Rock and a week later finished third at Mid-Ohio, starting from 17th position. He did a great job and showed he could fight with the best.

Pocono was a failure, with an early retirement. Warren’s very last IMSA race was the 3 Hours of Mid-Ohio with co-driver Gene Rutherford. The line-up was somewhat atypical with Group 5 cars entering the fray, four Porsche 935s, supported by a host of Porsche 934s. Those cars dominated the following seasons of IMSA racing and rang the bell for many underfunded small teams. They would no longer be able to fight for the win, and quit racing at the end of 1977.  Warren concentrated on his business, Agor Enterprises, which provides custom mobility products for accessible vans and those with physical challenges.

Warren Agor represents the type of driver who could never achieve world-class because of the lack of big financial backing needed. His talent and accomplishments were well noted in IMSA.
