Fischer design/built Monza |
| |
|
Mick
Fischer, owner of Fischer Motorsports of
Wauwatosa, WI, designed and built
his Chevrolet Monza racecar in 1979-80. He
campaigned the car in SCCA Club Racing GT-1
national and regional events, as well as the SCCA
Trans-Am professional series through 1984 or 85.
One of his sponsors was "Camaro Parts Exchange"
of Butler, WI.
The
chassis is a hybrid with a partial tube frame
joined to an OEM H-body chassis of a Chevrolet
Monza. He said, “We left the front frame rails
but stripped everything off of them and tied a
tube structure into it. It was my own design,
definitely a one off. It was tube frame with
coil-over shocks as was just becoming legal in
SCCA for GT-1 and Trans Am.”
He
explained, “The engine was a GT-1 spec 305. That
had been the class limit for a number of years
when SCCA… said you could go out to 310 CID.”
The larger piston set went for $2,500.00, he
stayed with his two older sets that had the
correct throw for a 305 cu. in. V-8. And went on
to say, “The rear fenders were right from GM
thru their Performance Parts catalog. The rest
of the body work was from Hairy Glass out of
Jacksonville Florida. They are actually still in
business and still have the molds for the Monza
parts.”
Fischer sold the car to Victor Achaval of
Chihuahua, Mexico. between 1987-88, and was glad
to hear it saw a lot of success in Mexico. Today
Mick is still involved in racing and is a part
time team engineer/ fabricator for a long-time
friend who owns Yard Racing. Together they run
the prep shop for vintage racecars located in
Milwaukee, WI. It was in their previous shop
that Mick built his Monza racecar over 30 years
ago.

Juan
Stanglmaier found the old Fischer-Monza abandoned in a junk yard in Saltillo, Mexico near Monterrey
in 2010, and rescued it. He didn't know the builder
until I contacted Mick Fischer and Victor Achaval.
They both recognized the car and remembered each other.
Stanglmaier has
restoration plans and ambitions of returning Fischer's old
Monza Trans-Am car to the track. |
